Hurricane season officially begins this week, on June 1st. We’ve already experienced an unusual April named storm this year with tropical storm Arlene. The official beginning of the tropical storm season will likely bring additional named storms in the Atlantic.
This year, experts are predicting slightly more named storms than average this season for hurricanes. They predict 11 to 17 named storms that involve wind speeds of 39mph or above. 5 to 9 of those storms are expected to become hurricanes, with wind speeds of 74mph or above. In an average year, there are 12 named storms, with 6 hurricanes on average.
Stay safe and informed this hurricane season.
